"I MANAGED TO BECOME AN OLD TORY CONSERVATIVE"
Talkative and interesting personal letters similar to those in the following lot. 4 December 1936 (an ALS): "...Hell has indeed broke loose, interviewers, movie folks...yes, the movie folks seem to be sincere. At any rate they are working like dogs. The town's in an uproar and you can't imagine what life is like." 4 September: "...when I had turned twelve and had goaded Mother about something she burst out with the fact that there was only one person in the family I had ever showed the slightest resemblance to, and it was that bewhiskered old wretch who didn't want anyone to know about his business and who couldn't bear to have a house full of women gabbing and quaking about his activities ... I'm enclosing three clippings [not present] which you can throw away. I though Sue Myricks handling of a routine 'G.W.T.W.' [Gone With the Wind] party (very popular in these parts) was good, especially the bit about [Gen.] Sherman. I was sorry to miss Mrs. [Julia] Peterkin [Southern writer]. She is one person for whom I have the greatest respect and admiration and to whom I owe a great deal..." 16 September: "...I cannot come to the Book Fair [in New York] for several million reasons ... I had considered it seriously but when the damned book [Gone With the Wind] crawled back up to third place I gave up the idea. It would be fun, of course ... but there are so many so-and-sos in the world and I am too tired to do anything about them at present..." 28 September: "...the review [of her book] by the preacher has given me great delight and John [her husband] and I quote with appreciation that wonderful line, 'Gone With the Wind breathes the atmosphere of the brothel' ... we were of that generation against which the preachers, the conservatives and the godly fulminated. According to these elders, all of us were hell bound, none fit to be mothers, none having any mental capacities, manners, morals, et cetera. We would end up in jails ... in brothels ... and almshouses ... there are quite a few we knew who are in insane asylums or in untimely graves from mixing fast whiskey with faster automobiles...I managed to become an old Tory conservative. Probably I was one all the time..." (4)
