ADAMS, John Quincy, President. Autograph letter signed ("J.Q. Adams") to Samuel Elliot, Washington, D.C., 24 April 1842. The former President returns Elliot's book "upon Politics and Law, Morals and Religion [which] was put into my hands...with a request that I would...give my opinion upon its merits." Due to the "perpetual pressure of indispensable occupations and absorbing cares" Adams has "found it impossible to give that continuous attention and searching investigation of facts and principles necessary for forming an estimate of a work so comprehensive, which could give value to any recommendation of its contents...I have read many of its pages and perceived much to commend and little if anything to reprove." During his 17 years in the House of Representatives, Adams, despite his age, was extremely active, particularly as an advocate of abolition; the house had passed a "gag" rule in 1836 to prevent discussion of the issue which remained in effect until 1844.
