[CIVIL WAR, VIRGINIA]. WEST & JOHNSON, publisher. Map of the State of Virginia, Containing the Counties, Principal Towns, Railroads, etc. Richmond: West & Johnson 1862. 656mm. x 922mm., neatly folding into original publisher's dark blue glazed paper wrappers, 165 x 115mm., upper cover gilt-lettered "Map of Virginia," within decorative border. exterior rubbed and scuffed, map with very minor tears at a few fold intersections and several small stains. FIRST EDITION. An important Confederate map of Virginia. Engraved folding map within elaborate decorative borders, large cartouche at top with "Sic Semper Tyrannis" emblem, very large vignette illustration of the capital building and grounds, list of principal railroads at left edge. A highly detailed map, showing adjacent parts of Pennsylvania (including Gettysburg), Delaware, Maryland and New Jersey; topography carefully rendered with cross-hatching and military features like roads, rail routes and telegraphic lines are indicated. Based on Crozet's maps of 1848 and 1859, West & Johnson's 1862 map was the first Virginia map published after the state's secession and the outbreak of war. It (and later editions) became the standard maps of this crucial theater of the conflict, and, with the shortage of detailed local maps for military use, it was frequently employed by the Confederate Armies in the field. Crandall 3066; Parish & Willingham 6204. Not in Phillips, List of Maps of America. Rare, particularly in original condition.
