The present composition is related to a drawing in the British Museum, London which Rinaldi connects to the Flagellation of Christ above the entry door of the Ospidaletto dei Crociferi, Venice executed around 1591 (S.M. Rinaldi, Palma il Giovane, 1984, p. 139, no. 527, and p. 240, figs. 131-2)
