HOOVER, Herbert C., President. Autograph letter signed ("Herbert Hoover") to Mr. Lampeer, n.p., 22 December 1937. 2 pages, 4to, boldly penned on pages 1 and 4 of a 4-page sheet of personal stationery. Very fine condition.
"THE TYPEWRITER...LEAVES A RECORD BY WHICH YOU CAN PROVE WHAT YOU DID NOT SAY."
Expounding the advantages of modern technology, the retired President sends a Holiday greeting: "I am not in favor of holograph letters. I would not get through 0 of 1 of my mail that way. Moreover the typewriter spells better and leaves a record by which you can prove what you did not say. And that is part of one's daily occupation. But the typewriter is a poor method of conveying emotion. Therefore this note is intended to convey more than usual wishes of a happy and prosperous New Year to you and yours."
It is well known that Hoover ALSs as President are extremely rare (reflected by the $15,400 realized at auction in 1989 for one example); post-White House letters are demonstrably less rare, but the present is a particularly attractive example, commenting directly on the former President's letter-writing habits and his preference for the typewriter.
