Johnson, in various public addresses, deplored the railroads for "their tendency to put inns and drovers out of business," and "voted against various railroad projects dear to the people of East Tennessee" (H. Trefousse, Andrew Johnson, p.38). In February 1861, Johnson voted against proposals for a rail line to the Pacific, although the bill passed in 1862.
