[SIGNER]. STONE, Thomas (1743-1787), Signer (Maryland). Partly printed document accomplished and signed ("T. Stone") with two additional signatures (one in text and one in docket on verso), Charles County [Maryland], ca. 1 January 1771. 1 page, oblong 4to, 144 x 182mm. (5.11/16 x 7.3/8in.), neatly backed leaving docket uncovered. A TOBACCO-TRADING LAWYER FILES A SUIT. behalf of his client, John Cooksey, Attorney Stone files a suit against one Andrew Simpson, who is indebted to Cooksey for 1,047 pounds "of crop tobacco and 5. 13s. current money," asserting Simpson attempted "craftily and subtilly to deceive and defraud" his client. Stone has accomplished the form, with some 62 words in his hand, and signed, for the plaintiff, at bottom.
Stone (1743-1787), one of the more conservative delegates to Congress, had joined the bar in 1764, entered the tobacco trade, and in 1773 was elected to represent Maryland in Congress. A supporter of efforts for reconciliation even after the Declaration of Independence, he later served on the committee which drafted the Articles of Confederation. Stone's letters and documents are now rare.
