BAILLY, Jean Sylvain (1736-1793). Histoire de l'astronomie moderne depuis la fondation de l'ecole d'Alexandrie jusqu'a l'epoque de 1782. Paris: De Bure, 1779-1782. 3 volumes, 4o (248 x 192 mm). Half titles, wood-cut head- and tail-pieces, 13 engraved folding plates in Vol. I, 5 in Vol. II. Contemporary mottled calf, spines gilt, green and red morocco lettering pieces (a few joints starting, a few dry patches, extremities slightly worn). Provenance: Fourqueux (bookplate on front pastedowns). FIRST EDITION. Bailly, who had studied under Nicolas de Lacaille and Alexis Clairaut, established his own observatory in the Louvre in 1760, and published a number of important research papers on astronomical subjects. However, it was the present history, together with his history of astronomy in antiquity (see below) that proved his most lasting achievement, and inspired his election to the Acadmie Franaise and the Acadmie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres. Already a member of the Acadmie des Sciences, this made him a triple academician, a distinction achieved by only one other Frenchman, Bernard de Fontenelle. Brunet I, p. 615. -- BAILLY.
