Mounted on guards throughout. 599 (of 600) hand-colored engraved plates only, on papier vlin, occasionally heightened in gold, 5 double-page, all after Huet or Prtre. (Lacking plate 422, occasional browning to text.) Green morocco-backed marbled boards, titled in gilt on spines. Provenance: unidentified armorial bookplate, dated 1846.
Later issue of the quarto edition (some plates in each volume bear the watermark "Hallines/1873", others "Dambrecourt frres"). The work was intended as a supplement to Buffon's Histoire Naturelle des Oiseaux, and is illustrated with about 800 figures of birds, depicting about 660 species.
