Half-title, title printed in red and black with large engraved printer's monogram, engraved portrait of the author by Mathieu Boulanger, 30 numbered engravings, consisting of 7 text engraving and 23 engraved plates, including 3 double-page and 9 folding (plates 28 and 29 very large folding plates each composed of 6 attached sheets or portions of sheets), woodcut initials and headpieces. (Portrait, a few plates and text leaves browned, some foxing and occasional dampstaining, repaired tear to plate 23, occasional staining at sheet junctures of plates, a few minor marginal tears at guards of folding plates.) Contemporary calf, spine gilt (worn, losses to back cover and corners, joints starting). Provenance: Daniel Molliere (bookplate on front pastedown); ownership signature deleted from titlepage.

First edition, second issue of "the best-illustrated neurological monograph of the seventeenth century" (Norman) and an important contribution to the study of the brain and spinal cord. Vieussens was chief physician of the Htel-Dieu de St. loi for over 40 years, and so was able to work on a large number of autopsies. His research led him to important new discoveries about the paths of the peripheral nerves and the pathology of heart disease.
