Engraved title, 153 engraved plates (Vol. I); engraved title and 177 engraved plates, numbered 1-169 and 1-8 (Vol. II), including 38 double page plates, 5 single page folding and 3 double page folding (small marginal tear to pl. 48, tiny marginal worming in last few leaves of Vol. I). Contemporary French mottled calf, elaborately gilt with a broad dentelle border composed of rocailles, leafy, tulip and lyre tools, interspersed with small stars and dots, sun tools in the corners, all within a triple gold fillet, spines in 8 compartments with 7 raised bands, green morocco lettering pieces in 2, others gilt with floral and foliate tools, small stars and quatrefoils, board ends gilt with triple fillet, turn-ins gilt, g.e. (some wear to joints and spine ends, small chips to spine ends of Vol. I, very small repairs extremities). Provenance: Roger Peyrefitte (bookplate on front pastedown of Vol. I). Brunet II, 1453.
