Lot Essay

The centerpiece bowl was executed in three materials: brass, alpaka and silver. The brass example may be the earliest version produced (1925-1931). Approximately 20 pieces of the alpaka version were produced from 1929 to 1931, and four pieces of the silver version were executed in 1929. The Wiener Werksttte Price List of August 1928 cites the brass model on page 405 at a cost of 105 schilling (18.75 USD). The model was exhibited at the Exposition Internationale des Arts Dcoratifs, Paris, 1925.

cf. Die Kunst, (Vol. 54), 1926, p. 222 for an illustration of the centerpiece model. Waltraud Neuwirth, Wiener Werksttte: Avantgarde, Art Dco, Industrial Design, 1984, p. 191, fig. 150; Peter Noeuvo, ed., Josef Hoffmann Designs, 1992, p. 172, ill. 268 for similar examples in brass.
