Lot Essay

The decorated border with flowers casting shadows on the ground is typical of Flemish illuminations of this period. The border and the shape of the central scene, deliberately cut off at the top, is probably derived from works by the Master of the First Book of Maximilian from the 1470s, T. Kren (ed.), Renaissance Paintings in Manuscripts, Treasures from the British Library, 1983, color pl. II-III
