These drawings are copied after Aegidius Sadeler's engravings of 1615 after Pieter Stevens, Hollstein XXII, nos. 125-8. Each of the six prints represents two months with the relevant astrological signs in the sky. Brentel has eliminated the astrological signs in order to make the drawings into a series of the seasons. The idealised vision of Italy shown in the prints suggested by the temple and villa in the background is improved upon in the drawings, in which the bright colors vividly evoke the clarity of Italian light. The drawings are, however, purely imaginary as Brentel never crossed the Alps, and his knowledge of Italy was based entirely on prints such as those by Sadeler
