Lot Essay

It is likely that this painting dates from the 1730's as the changing Game Laws discouraged coursing and encouraged fox hunting, as foxes were not covered by the Laws.

The huntsman and hare are the similar to those in a painting, signed and dated 1738 illustrated in S. Deuchar, Sporting Art in 18th Century England, New Haven, 1988, p. 80.
