Lot Essay

Although there is no known painted prototype by Jan Brueghel I the present drawing, which probably dates from the 18th Century, is clearly inspired by him. The bright colors and the scene of peasants in a market square recall paintings by Jan Breughel I such as the Fishmarket at Munich or A Village with a Market in the Arnot Art Museum, K. Ertz, Jan Breughel der Altere, die Gemälde, Cologne, 1979, figs. 189 and 277 respectively
