Please note the following additional information to the catalogue note: Weeks was only twenty-seven when he executed this work, but it already shows his developing skills as a fine painter of the figures and animals, as well as his penchant for scenes set in bright sunshine with cool shadows. This can be clearly seen in the luxuriant costume of the standing shepherdess, whose vivid clothing contrasts markedly with the verdant setting.

We are grateful to Dr. Ellen K. Morris for preparing this catalogue entry.

Lot Essay

This painting is a fine example of Week's early years in Morocco. Although it shows influence from the Barbizon School (particularly Diaz De La Pena and Jacque) on Weeks, it also suggests the young artist's growing predilection of the naturalistic rendering of the exotic.

Dr. Ellen K. Morris will include this painting in her forthcoming Weeks catalogue raisonn.
