Lot Essay

The identity of the sitter is still a mystery, but the inscription on the back suggests that she is shown at St. Germain-en-Laye, a western suburb of Paris, in August 1879. Although resident in London at the time, Tissot is known to have been in Paris in October 1879, when he made studies of people visiting the Louvre, most of them featuring his mistress Kathleen Newton. These were to lead to a series of paintings, including a watercolor-Au Louvre, c.1879-80 sold in these rooms on 11 June 1993, lot 99.
