Lot Essay

We are grateful to Mr. Alastair Laing for pointing out that the traditional title of Wounded Achilles for the present painting is probably misleading. He notes that the subject is one of those painted Académies with vaguely identifying accessories, such as the Endymion by Brenet in the Worcester Museum of Art, or the variously attributed Morpheus in the Cleveland Museum of Art. The association of armor with a number of drawn Académies indicates that these were standard Academy props, and if anything relate the present painting to the famous Antique sculpture of The Dying Gaul. Mr Laing believes that the present lot is probably by a pupil or follower of François Boucher, executed circa 1750-60
