John Hayes has associated the present painting -- which he knows from a color transparency -- with a Landscape with Woodcutter (present location unknown), that he published in The Landscape Paintings of Thomas Gainsborough (I, 1982, pp. 260-1, figs. 306-7) as a work 'clearly of high quality' by an unknown imitator of Gainsborough.
