A Knight, full length, holding a Sword and Shield

The present painting may be associated with two other paintings of similar compositions depicting Counts of Flanders (see Sotheby's, New York, May 21, 1998, lots 11a and 12). Our unidentified Count of Holland and Belgium strikes a similar pose, carries the same weapons (a drawn sword and a shield with a rampant lion) and is of comparable dimensions to these two paintings. The cartouche at the top would have originally included the name of the sitter.
