The books: "But in any case of course I will be as delighted to inscribe them as I am at your having so much wanted them that you reclaimed them from their bookstore obscurity" (September 22, 1965). The Canterbury Tales plates: "We are as disgusted as you are at the thought of anyone cutting up any book. How did you manage to pick up those pictures. I am curious about them" (January 17, 1966). After Kent's house and his books were burned by lightning, Kent writes to Charlotte Osborne: "It's a shame that you didn't get to see us while we still had a house to be seen. But we are building another one and meanwhile living comfortably in little annex to the barn... Well, virtually all our furnishings were destroyed, and most of them are, for sentimental reasons, irreplaceable. But we still have friends, and we hope that you, as one of the best of them, will find it possible before many weeks to drop in and see us" (June 6, 1969).
