1970 MERCEDES-BENZ 280SL
Chassis No. 113044127White with black interior and black roof
Engine: six cylinder, overhead camshaft, Bosch fuel injection, 2,778cc 170bhp at 5,700rpm; Gearbox: four speed automatic; Suspension: independent front and rear; Brakes: four wheel disc. Left hand drive.
In 1963 Mercedes-Benz replaced their 190 series with an all-new SL, which was wider and more angular than before and used a 2.3 litre engine. This unit was itself replaced by the 2.5 and finally the 2.8, the nomenclature following the relevant engine sizes, thus 230, 250 or 280SL. The 280 remained in production until the spring of 1971, by which date almost 24,000 had been built.
This example appears to be in generally sound condition; the car has been in dry storage for over a year. The paintwork is fair, the car having been repainted at some time, with a few scratches and minor cracks in places. The panelwork is straight and the shut lines are all good. The wheel arches are clean and the car has relatively new tires fitted. Some minor exterior door trim has come adrift. The interior has original black Mercedes tex seats and trim, with front head restraints fitted. There is a Clifford alarm and modern stereo system fitted. The interior is tidy and the black roof has a few older marks on the headlining. A Nardi wood rimmed steering wheel is fitted and the Mercedes has roll-up windows. The engine bay is normal and looks to be complete but we did notice a wet oil patch underneath the car, so recommend a proper service and recommissioning before any regular use. It is offered as seen and without a hard top.
The SL models are still very popular and reliable sports cars and with some attention to detail, this should be a useable summer car.
