Introduced in 1939, Mercury quickly became nearly synonymous with Hot Rod. The Messenger of the Gods whose image was chosen to identify this fleet-footed mid-range automobile helped, but it was the 95hp flathead V8 that really made a spirited performer of Ford Motor Company's new entry into the mid-price market. Styling recalled Ford's Lincoln Zephyr, giving the Mercury an up-to-date and exceptionally attractive appearance. With a vast array of speed equipment already available for the flathead, Mercury's 239ci. version was readily breathed upon to complement its streamlined styling.
Mercury continued its popularity with street rodders after World War II, getting ever-larger engines stuffed into ever-lower chassis. Postwar-restyled '49 and '50 Mercs became a symbol of '50s rebellion, nosed, decked, lowered, flamed and frenched into a plain, but meanly functional, statement. When fat-fendered street rods came back into vogue in the '80s pre-war Mercs were ideal subjects for the treatment which combined reliable and powerful late model powertrains with classic hot rod styling.
The street rod offered here features a contemporary execution of '39 Mercury styling and classic street rod features. Dramatically lowered, the essentially stock Mercury body has been smoothed with concealed hardware; its spare decoration focussing attention on the stock chrome-rimmed molded headlight surrounds and classic Lincoln Mercury grille. Really a roadster, without side window glass, it has a Carson-style lift off top, skirts and full wheel covers with tri-lobe spinner centers. The windshield is a vee shape like the original but without frames, cleaner in execution and appearance, and is accented by the two windshield post mounted chrome spotlights. The runningboards have been slimmed, integrated with the fenders and painted body color, which is bright red with the de rigeur yellow flames. The interior is white pleated naugahyde repeated on the firewall. A late model GM drivetrain provides ample urge. The tilt steering column is an innovation that would be appreciated by '50s hot rodders, creating an unobstructed bench front seat that is as amenable to amorous activities as the back seat was in the old days. Today's street rodders, particularly those of generous proportion, may find the tilt wheel is more valuable for easing in- and egress.
