1960 ROLLS-ROYCE SILVER CLOUD II
Chassis No. STB134
Dark blue with light tan leather interior
Engine: V8, 6,230cc, twin SU carburetors; Gearbox: four speed automatic; Suspension: front, coil spring and wishbones, rear, rigid axle with semi-elliptic leaf springs. Brakes: drums all round. Right hand drive.
Although it looked similar to its predecessor, the Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II as introduced in 1959 marked the beginning of a new era for the Crewe-based company. Answering the demands for greater power, particularly in the face of ever bigger-engined American rivals, Rolls-Royce had designed an all new light alloy 6230cc V8 for the Cloud (and its sister, Bentley S2). Compact, and no heavier than the six cylinder unit it replaced, it had a dramatic effect on performance and acceleration, with a very respectable top speed of just under 115mph and performance to match. As always, the standard of finish and quality of detail were typical from this manufacturer, with plenty of leather upholstery and fine woodwork to cosset the passengers. The model eventually gave way to the Cloud III when the company introduced a more radical styling change to the series.
This right hand drive example has been in storage for some time and would benefit from some general cosmetic cleaning. The car has been repainted and is dark blue with light tan interior upholstery. The present indicated mileage is 92,954. The interior has been refurbished and is all in presentable order. Externally the panelwork is fair with one door and the trunk lid closing poorly. The brightwork is all in fair condition. The engine bay is now showing its age but the car does run, although we had not driven it prior to cataloguing. Overall the Rolls-Royce is perhaps best described as being in presentable order rather than in any show condition and is therefore sensibly priced in our opinion.
