Although Porsche offered six different engine options in their 356 line-up in 1954, only two, the 1500 and 1500S, were exported to the United States. This was based, correctly, by Hoffman that the American buyers would not be interested in any small engine derivatives. Hoffman was, of course, the highly successful Porsche U.S. distributor who two years earlier, over lunch with Ferry Porsche, had sketched out the design for the Porsche emblem, an emblem that is to this day synonymous with Porsche design and quality the world over. The roller bearing engine had a somewhat fragile reputation that was probably undeserved; in a race car, it was undoubtedly more reliable whereas in a road car this was not so, as the majority of drivers could not keep the revs up. Not that this harmed sales though, and by the Spring of 1954, Porsche had built their five thousandth car, an astonishing figure for a model that had been in production for so few years.
