SAMSON BEN ZADOK (pupil of Meir of Rothenburg, 13th century). Sefer Tashbets (Responsa). MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM
[Ashkenaz, 15th century]
240 x 170 mm. [2] + 77 leaves, with old Hebrew foliation. Dark brown ink. Ashkenazic semi-cursive scripts. The first leaf is blank with a later inscription, the second leaf recto has the opening text 'mutar lelekh' upside down, the verso has the same text, fol. 1r of the Hebrew foliation has the text again in a different hand, with glosses, the hand running until fol. 7r, on fol. 7v the hand changes and this is the scribe who wrote the colophon on fol. 76v. Last leaf (fol. 77) originally blank with later inscriptions on the recto. Some marginal notes. Some captions and notes in red ink, under-drawing for an illuminated initial 'mem' on fol. 1r. (Natural holes, water damage especially towards the end, some older repairs toward the end, some tears not affecting the text.) Nineteenth-century half morocco, two paper flyleaves at back and front.
CONTENTS:
With glosses by R. Solomon ben Elhanan Halevi Breisach (who, in contrast to Neubauer's assumption, is not the scribe). Most manuscript copies of this work, over 40 in number, differ greatly from the editions and other manuscripts, both in the text and in the order of the paragraphs; this manuscript is no exception. The glosses are not found in most of the other manuscripts. First printed in Cremona 1556 (Vinograd, Thesaurus, p. 647, no. 6).
PROVENANCE:
1. Abraham ben Eliezer.
2. Judah Loeb ben Pinhas of Krotoshin (fol. 52v and end).
3. Leibush Lesser and Isaac ben Mordecai (fol. 44r).
4. Daniel Itzig (stamped).
