SOLOMON BEN JUDAH HA-NASI (second half 14th century). Sitrei Torah (commentary on Moses Maimonides' Moreh Nevukhim). MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER
[Ashkenaz, 16th century]
Small square 2o[?] (240 x 185 mm). [3] + 191 leaves (apparently imperfect, see contents). Old Hebrew foliation. Dark brown ink. Ashkenazic semi-cursive script. (Browned and occasionally soiled, ink corroded in a few places affecting text, older repairs especially at the corners hardly affecting text, first two leaves with considerable marginal repairs, third leaf fragmentary but apparently without loss of text, pasted onto nineteenth-century paper, probably during the latest binding, fol. 13 torn with loss of 1/3 of the text, other minor defects.) Nineteenth-century half morocco (dampstained and scuffed), two paper flyleaves at back and front.

Fol. [1]r-[3]r: preliminary material in another hand; [3]v: blank; 1r-191v: text (missing from iii:29).
The author, who lived in an Ashkenazic environment, probably came there from Provence in the fourteenth century. He completed the first part of this work in 1368. Cf. M.Z. Nehorai, R. Shlomo ben Iuda Hanassi and his Commentary on the Guide of the Perplexed (Ph.D. diss. Jerusalem 1978). Yom Tov Lippman Muelhausen (14th-15th century) copied extensively from this work in his philosophical treatise Sefer ha-Eshkol. The only other copy of this unpublished commentary is Cambridge, UL, MS Add. 393.2. Cf. M. Steinschneider, in Festschrift [...] A. Berliner (Frankfurt 1903) p. 358, no. 37.
