Maker's mark of Gorham Mfg. Co., Martele, L over V V, 1907
With softly hammered finish, the deep bowl with incurved hexafoil sides, with broad molded border chased with lush blossoms with curvilinear stems and leaves, divided by small floral sprays, with serpentine rims, on conforming pedestal base--11in. (29.8cm.) wide, 5in. (14.6cm.) high, 42.5oz.

Lot Essay

This compotier was completed on June 3, 1907. It was worked by a silversmith, in room M3, for forty-eight hours. It was chased by number 32 for eight hours fifteen minutes. He is believed to be George Shakel, one of the English-born brothers who worked as chasers at Gorham. He worked for Gorham from 1880-1900. He went back to England for two years, then returned and resumed his duties at Gorham from 1902 until his demise in 1926. The net factory price was set at $180.00.
