AU BON CLIMAT
Jim Clendenen, owner and winemaker, is a true original and one of California's oeno-pioneers. An unabashed admirer of Burgundy, he was an early practitioner of vinification by microclimate. Three of his finest limited-production wines are offered below. The "Nuits-Blanches" Chardonnay is made in a style inspired by the rare and bold Chardonnays of the Cte de Nuits in Burgundy. It is vinified in "200 new oak," a technique developed by Dominique Laurent involving the racking of the wine into a second new oak barrel during aging. "Isabelle" Pinot Noir is made from Clendenen's best barrels of Pinot Noir, and is named after his daughter born in 1994. The vertical of Benedict/Sanford & Benedict Pinots back to 1987 will demonstrate the aging potential of Clendenen's top Pinots. A bottle of the 1989 Benedict Pinot Noir tasted in April 1999 was superb, possessing a gorgeous rich complex earthy black cherry nose with orange rind and a touch of iron; powerful and alcoholic flavors loaded with fruit, a touch a sweet vegetation and prominent tannins; a long intense finish; and an overall impression of marvelous warmth and complexity.
