Lot Essay

This drawing is one of the few to have been dated by the artist. A portrait of Madame de Flicourt is at Chantilly which may well have been a portrait of the young girls's mother. Richard de Lédans's manuscript which records the names of the sitters, such as the aged Carmontelle remembered them, was very badly written and was frequently poorly transcribed by La Mésangère on the mounts. Such a misreading may explain the present spelling of the name
