Lot Essay

The drawing, dated by Lorenz Eitner to about 1822-3, belongs to a group of studies connected to lithographs. Most of the drawings of this series are rather small in size, and characterised by their calligraphic handling. The lithographs and the other drawings of the group, are very much influenced by Persian miniatures. A drawing formely in baron Schwitter's collection, and now in a American private collection, is comparable, both in handling and subject, to the present study. A copy by Géricault of a Persian miniature, Princess and Attendants, is recorded in the Besançon Museum under the inventory number D 2-118.
His de La Salle was a close friend of the artist, both were officiers in the distinguished corps des gardes of King Louis XVIII
