A new type of seal in the name of Philaretos Brachamios. He obtained the dignity of sebastos after the reign of Nicephorus Botaneiates (1078-1081), at the beginning of the reign of Alexius I (1081-1118). In theory this gave him total command of all the Byzantine armies in the Eastern part of the Empire, notably those of the Duchy of Antioch, but at this date most of this territory had been overrun by the Turks who had already reached the banks of the river Marmara. Philaretos lost Antioch in December 1084 to the Seljuks of Rum under Soliman, but managed to maintain a hold of a small part of the Empire's eastern territories.
