Amalric succeeded his brother Baldwin III as king of Jerusalem in 1063. He formed an alliance with the Byzantine emperor Manuel Comnenus against Fatimid Egypt, which was at this time in serious decline. Though frustrated in his ambition to annex Egypt, Amlaric presided over one of the most prosperous periods in the Latin kingdom's history.
