Hugh of Payens, a knight of Champagne, was granted permission by Baldwin I to settle with a few companions in a wing of the royal palace, the former mosque al-Aqsa, in 1118. They were established as the military order of 'poor knights of Christ' at Jerusalem in 1120. With the Hospitallers, the Templars became the principle defenders of the Holy Land, relying on the strength of their fortresses. Their badge was a red cross, worn on a white tunic by the knights, on a black tunic by the sergeants.
