An accomplished administrator, Gregory worked hard at ensuring the success of the Counter-Reformation. He celebrated the news of the St Bartholomew's Day massacre in France with a Te Deum and services of thanksgiving, and actively supported the Catholic League against the Hugenots, and Philip II of Spain against England and the Protestant Netherlands. He gave his name to the revised calendar which replaced the Julian calendar in 1582.
