Lot Essay

Constantine appears alone, dating this seal to after 681 when he deposed his two brothers Heraclius and Tiberius. Constantine had recently presided over the Council of Constantinople at which monotheletism had been rejected, and the champions of monotheletism, including the patriarchs Sergius, Pyrrhus and Cyrus, as well as Pope Honorius, were excommunicated. Constantine was acclaimed the 'new Marcian' and the 'new Justinian'.
