Isaac Comnenus came to the throne after successfully uniting most of Asia Minor in revolt against Michael VI. As on his coins the emperor is depicted holding a drawn sword, suitable for a member of the military aristocracy. Forced to abdicate after only two years, Isaac put away his sword and retired as a monk to the Studite monastery.
