Manuel comes from the illustrious family that produced the emperor Nicephorus Botaneiates (1078-1081). He and his wife Synadene gave a donation to the monastery of The Pantocrator founded by John II. Several of these seals have been found in Bulgaria, suggesting Manuel owned property in that province.
