Lot Essay

"The most intriguing coin of the Zauditu series may be the silver half birr. ..a few also were made with their denomination unmarred. All of these are generally considered to be presentation pieces due to their rarity. However, a small number of pieces showing various degrees of circulation have been observed. Thus, this is the only coin of Zauditu that could arguably be considered a regular issue piece.

The second Harar issue was struck from Remington gun catridges left by the Egyptians when they abandoned the city" (Dennis Gill, The Coinage of Ethiopia, Eritrea and Italian Somalia)
