cover DEAL: 1819 (1 March) entire letter from Calcutta to London, rated "1/8" and inscribed "p Martha", the address panel showing faint step-type "DEAL/SHIP LETTER" (S.8) in black, just overstruck by superb strike of the framed "INDIA" of London (In.8) in black; a few light stains and two folds clear of the markings but in no way detracting. The Ship Letter Act of 1819 was not passed until 14 July and the relevant India Letter handstamp had not been received at Deal, hence the application of the London handstamp (probably one of the earliest known examples, being a year earlier than recorded by Robertson).
