cover -- 1830 (31 Dec.) entire letter, addressed in English, to Rajah Rammohum Roy Buhadar in London, from his son in Delhi (?) with the enclosure written entirely in Bengali, rated "2/4" and inscribed "p Intrepid", the address panel with superb strike of the framed "INDIA LETTER/DEAL" (In.1) in black. The Rajah, Envoy to the King of Delhi (himself in turn being accountable to the Great Mogul), had been sent secretly to London (without the knowledge of the Governor General to India) to engage in negotiations with the Court of the East India Company. The King perceived that this approach could circumvent the imposition of unfair fiscal restrictions that had been placed upon him by the Treaty of Ameers of Scinde. Full transcript (translated into somewhat quaint English) included. A fascinating item. Photo
