cover -- 1838 and 1849 entires to London showing fine strikes of the framed "INDIA LETTER/DEAL" (In.1), the former from Calcutta with the strike in red on the reverse, the latter from Mauritius with the strike in blue on the address panel, rated "1/-" and "8" respectively, the latter inscribed "Pr. Equator"; the 1849 item with folds and small tear just touching the marking but still attractive. The reason for the application of the marking to the 1849 entire remains obscure as the privilege rate had been withdrawn in 1840. Photo for the second item
