cover 1840 (6 Jan.) entire letter from Penang to the London Missionary Society "Via Madras per overland Mail" and rated "1/-", the reverse shows a good strike of the boxed "PENANG/Paid" datestamp in red, partly overstruck by London arrival; both struck on flap which opens well for display. It is rare to find this handstamp with the complete set of date plugs and the closure at right. This is thought to be the earliest example of this postmark, fine. Photo
