Lot Essay

The form of this mirror with palm fronds surrounding an oval plate derives from the designs of John Linnell, such as, a drawing inscribed 'The Rev.Mr.Milner,2 for his own glass B gold' dated 1773 and illustrated in H. Hayward and P.Kirkham, William and John Linnell, 1980, pl. 195. The use of ruffled shells in the cresting and apron is an earlier feature based on Palladian styles of the 1730's and 1740's.
