These painted chairs were probably decorated by a local itinerant artist possibly specializing in Yorkshire views. No printed sources for these painted tablets have been found and, as such, specific identification is not always possible, however, the scenes depicted probably comprise the following, all in Yorkshire: Roche Abbey, Kirkstall Abbey, Fountains Abbey, Rievaulx Abbey, York Minster, an aqueduct near Knaresborough, and the coastline near Whitby. The castle and the country house viewed through trees have not been identified, but it is possible the house may have been the one for which the chairs were originally supplied.
