Lot Essay

Jonghelinck worked at Antwerp as a medallist, seal engraver, sculptor and caster of bronze statues for the Spanish government of Philip II. A document of 1598 records a payment of 148 Livres 15 Sous and 9 Deniers made to the artist on account of four medals in gold which he was ordered to execute for the Archduke Albert (see Forrer III, p,85).
