Lot Essay

Though there are earlier possibilities, it is here suggested that this is a seal of Theodore Synadenos Ducas Comnenus Palaeologus, one of the most active supporters of the emperor Andronicus III. He governed in turn Thrace, Constantinople, Mesembria, Epirus and Thesslaonika (PLP no.27120). This would be one of the last uses of this type of monogram on a seal.
