This family was established under the Comnenians after Stephen Kontostephanos became domesticos of the skolos under Basil II. They are frequently found at the head of the Byzantine fleet. The owner of this seal is not known for certain. The grand-duke Isaak under Alexis Comnenus cannot be a candidate. Perhaps Isaac the son of Andronicus Kontostephanos-Comnenus (fl. end of 12th century) is a possibility.
