Nicephorus Melissenus, from a family loyal to the empire since the eighth century, held a number of important military posts, and even aspired to the throne, before settling for the rank of caesar, given by his brother-in-law Alexis Comnenus. The steps in his career have been reconstructed by Zacos and Veglery (see ZV.2697), and there has since been discovered a new seal giving him the titles of catepan and judge of Cyprus.
